The Widow and the Orphan

Blessed is the one who remembers the widow and the orphan. Great is the spirit of the one who comforts them, and holy is the one who defends them from their adversity. For in such a heart as this there is three things which bring integrity to the lights which dance upon the soul of a mortal. One is respect for the freedom of humankind, the second is respect for the happiness of all living things, and the third is honor given to the dignity of our humanity. When one gives charity to the widow and to the orphan, one puts these three glories into one, and thus emerges a compendium of each of these beauties into a most singular image of profundity. The shade, the moonlight, and the river have made friends in the depths of the night, as each of these is a symbol for the virtues of which I have spoken. So in this way, put these virtues deeply into your hearts with the same depth by which you count the number of the stars in the heavens into the depths of forever by the measuring stick of our time upon the earth.
